He graduated on Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory in the field of percussion instruments; he studied by Prof. Jaroslav Vacek and Prof. Miroslav Kympl. He attended special courses of Karel Velebný, one of our best jazz pedagogues. He met our leading jazz musicians and started to admire jazz in itself and also great pedagogical work of Karel Velebný, whose natural authority, sense of humour and friendly relationship with students were absolutely fantastic. In this time, he got the idea that it would be great to pass his knowledge to the others and to work in the pedagogical field.

He played percussion instruments in various pop and jazz musical groups. He made many international tours with them – not only in Central Europe, but also in whole Scandinavia.

Now he works as a teacher in Elementary Art School in Prague and he does his best to pass his musical experience to his students.

For last five years, he irregularly attends the legendary school of Miloš Veselý for consultations. Miloš Veselý is an excellent percussion instruments professor and author of many textbooks.

Now he introduces his percussion instruments textbook, which is well used by his students.

Foreword

Dear friends and percussion instruments fans!

I hope that this textbook will guide you through my new educational method: "audio note form.“ This technique is meant to be used as an accessory to classical instruction of percussion instruments for moderately advanced students in art school. If you do not feel you are at this level, I recommend further study and use of this publication with a more advanced musician.

I decided to write this textbook because my students were interested in musical styles and their forms, but the existing educational materials were not sufficient. Reading a score and playing specific styles using a metronome only got them to one level, but they needed to apply their knowledge in practice. My aim was to connect a score with an audio record so that my students would feel not only like accompanying percussion instrument players, but also like solo instrumentalists.

The main goal of this textbook is to give you specific musical knowledge, while providing a chance for you to find your own personal musical style. The latter is very important for your progress. The most important thing to remember is to have patience while practicing the styles introduced. With time and dedication, you will master these forms and enjoy a richer experience of music.

How to use this textbook

Scattered throughout the textbook are practice chapters. In each chapter, it is important to advance from the simplest stage (application of version 1 – playback, version 1) to the most difficult one (application of version 2 – playback, version 2).

First, learn about the theory for the style, read the score and play it at various tempos. Next, practice with a metronome using your desired value. After mastering both these parts, you can then proceed to the final playback stage.

The soundtrack of percussion instruments is recorded in a half playback system, as a hi-hat in fourths. A bell doubles it sometimes. This allows the player to finish the rest of the percussion instrument score in each chapter. We recommend using a PA loudspeaker system, but you can use also a small audio device, such as a phone, connected to a CD player. Alternatively, stand a small speaker combo on a slanted chair (near a hi-hat pedal), turn up the sound, and enjoy the musical experience!
